Q&A with Mark
01
What defines you in this life?
Not just one thing, that’s for sure. It’s not like I can point to my role as a dad or a husband or a founder and say, “Yes, that’s me!” Don’t get me wrong, those things are a huge part of who I am, and they bring me considerable fulfilment and happiness. But at the end of the day, what really defines me is the whole journey of my life. The many twists and turns, the ups and downs, the painful lessons learned along the way, and the ways in which I’ve grown. It’s about where I come from, the experiences that have shaped me, and how I choose to move forward each day.
02
What is the biggest risk you have ever taken?
That is easy to answer, especially now as a British citizen. Leaving the country of my birth, my family, and my business in order to come to the UK was risky, and very challenging. My son has a rare blood condition that required treatment here and the stars aligned enabling us to leave Cape Town, move to Oxfordshire and watch as his life was transformed by the remarkable team at the John Radcliffe Hospital. I remember we came across at something like twenty three South African Rand to a single British pound and that was unsettling. But I had to leave my daughter in Cape Town to finish her schooling and no words can describe what that was like.

What inspired you to start Revenue Arc?
A pattern I couldn’t stop seeing, and what grew into an all-consuming conviction. After many years in management consulting I’d watched the same thing repeatedly: companies failing at scale in ways that were visible years earlier, not in the numbers, but in the system underneath them. And the leadership team was always the last to see it, not through incompetence, but because the pressure to believe the plan and go along with the story is strongest on the inside. Revenue Arc was built to close that gap. I wanted to establish the truth of where a company stands, then build the systems that scale from there. Growth is never just sales performance. It’s the whole engine, firing in sync.

What sets Revenue Arc apart?
Two things. Our depth of experience (over 30 commercial transformations across technology, software and services) and the instrumentation behind it. Underpinning the work is the deepest forensic study of B2B scale-ups I know of: why they fail, and how the survivors differ. That evidence base, sharpened by three decades inside these companies, means we know what scales and what stalls, and we can prove it with data. The more intricate the revenue system, the greater the value we add. And private equity firms, among the most discerning buyers in the world, trust us to strengthen their portfolios and build their value-creation playbooks.

If you could get only one message across to the Chief executives and investors of scale-ups, what would it be?
Establish your position before you attempt the climb. Most scaling decisions are made against a picture of the company that is partly story and detached from the data that really matters, driven by ambition, and accelerated by pressure. No company scales past the truth. Get an evidence-based, agreed position on where you actually are: the whole system, not the parts, because each element only ever performs as well as the system it operates in. From an honest baseline, almost anything is fixable. From a false one, capital just compounds the flaws. And if you want to know more, talk to me. My advice is free on the first call.
